Children of all ages were welcomed to the Family Tent at the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge Festival and got involved in free fun Polynesian-themed activities. They learned about the ancient practice of outrigger canoe paddling, basic paddling techniques, rope tying and the parts of the canoe while cheering on the racing teams as they started and finished each race at the end of Pier 26.
Other activities in the Family Tent included Polynesian storytelling, classes on how to make flower leis and ukelele lessons while parents enjoyed free fitness classes and music and dance performances at the adjacent Hawaiian Airlines Stage and have lunch and dessert at one of the food trucks in the Dining Area.
The response to the Family Tent was overwhelmingly positive and New York Outrigger is already looking to expand the size and programming of the Family Tent for the 2015 Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge.
